Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters is a 2013 action horror movie written and directed by Tommy Wirkola. It is a continuation for the fairy tale of German folklore "Hansel and Gretel", in which the holders are now cultivated and working as a duo of witches exterminators to rent. The film stars Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton in the title roles with Famke Janssen, Peter Stormare, Thomas Mann, Pihla Viitala and Derek Mears as the support distribution.
As in the classic fairy tale, Hansel and Gretel are abandoned by her father in a forest, and children enter a gingerbread house and are captured by a canibalistic witch. The witch forces Hansel to continually eating sweets to get fat and enslaves Gretel. She cares about her and incinerate her in the oven.
In the fifteen years following, Hansel and Gretel, now adults, have become famous witch hunters, killing hundreds of witches. The pair is somehow immune to spells and curses, but the incident at the gingerbread house has changed Hansel changed with a form of diabetes induced by magic. He needs a shot of insulin every few hours or he will die. [N 1]
Hansel and Gretel come to the city of Augsburg and avoid that Sheriff Berringer will run a beautiful young woman named mine. Mayor Englemann has hired the brothers to rescue the missing children of the city, which is presumed abducted by witches. Berringer hires trackers for the same mission with the hope of disabling mayor and cement the power of it. Hansel and Gretel capture the witch of horns and discover that the witches are preparing for the coming of the wine, where they plan to sacrifice twelve children to obtain immunity to shoot, their greatest weakness.
The great witch, Muriel, attacks the city with her army and abducted another child. She attacks Gretel, who is rescued by Ben, a local teenager and an avid fan of his who plans to become a witch hunter. Hansel falls off the broom of a witch and is lost in the forest. The next morning, Mina finds it trapped in a tree and takes it to a nearby spring, where she cures her wounds and make love in the healing waters of spring. Grenel is attacked by Berringer and the posse of her, which hit her before being stopped by the Muriel Troll, Edward. Edward kills Berringer and her from her men and tells Gretel that he helped her because the trolls serve witches. Hansel and Gretel discover an abandoned cottage that they learn is the lair of the witch and the childhood house. Muriel tells them the truth of her past.
Hansel and Gretel's mother was a white witch called Adrianna who married a farmer, explaining the immunity of the brothers to black magic. On the night of the last moon of blood, Muriel planned to use the heart of the white witch to complete her potion. She found Adrianna too powerful and decided to use Gretel's heart at her place. To get rid of Adrianna, she revealed to the people of the town that Adrianna was a witch. The resulting angry mafia burned him alive and hung up Hansel and Gretel, who had been trying to protect them by leaving them in the forest.
The brothers fight against Muriel before stabbing Hansel and Abduce Gretel to complete his long-term ceremony. Hansel wakes up with mine, which is revealed to be a white witch. She cures it again and uses a Grimoire to bless Him's Arsenal. Hansel, Mina, and Ben, interrupt the Saturday of the moon of blood. Mine Slaughters dark witches with a gatling pistol while Hansel frees children. Edward challenged Muriel and liberates Gretel before Muriel releases him from the cliff. Hansel, Ben and Mina follow the Muriel footpath to the original gingerbread house, now rotten and deteriorated. Muriel kills Mina before Hansel shoots him. The brothers commit to Muriel in a brutal fight that ends with them decapitating it with a shovel. They burned the body of it in a pyre and collect the reward of it for rescuing children. In the end, they are directed to their next Bruges Hunt, now accompanied by Ben and Edward.
